persuassive essay

Savannah S. Grey

How would you feel if your culture and ancestors were insulted and dramatized by things like cartoons and sports mascots? Then they would have the nerve to ignore your protests and say helplessly that you should be proud that they’re honoring your heritage? Admit it, you’d feel pretty mad wouldn’t you? These ridiculous Native American names and images should be gone from United States sports teams.

Most mascot names and costumes are both hostile and insulting to the Native American culture.  The NCAA is supporting this idea, but is having some trouble with some particularly stubborn colleges. The Native American community has been fighting for quite some time to prevent these hurtful images from happening, but everyone has been ignoring them since. The Native Americans are the ones who should be listened to, they’re the ones being affected. If they don’t approve of these sports teams doing what they do, then we should listen to them.

Some sports teams and cartoons feed the racial stereotypes that make the Native Americans want to fight to stop this nonsense. Their mascots are portrayed as violent, loud, savages and claim that their team will do gruesome things to the other team. Some mascots or cartoons bring up big-nosed and red-skinned and long black, feathered hair into the mix. They even mention how all Native Americans live in teepees and hunt buffalo in their free time, which isn’t true of course.
