Book Project #2 by Savannah Grey
Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare dates back into the wonderful Victorian age in
London where our heroin, Tessa Gray, believes she’s finally found a home with the Shadowhunters. But that threatens to be taken away from her as well when the head of the Institute, Charlotte, is given an ultimatum to find the elusive Mortmain within two weeks. It’s most difficult enough but Mortmain is already spinning his web of dead ends and alliances. Meanwhile, there’s a complicated love triangle in all the commotion that will make your emotions just explode.
I would assume the Downworld is a theme. The whole story is tied with love and romance themes, the need for family and friendships, dealing with betrayal, don’t trust a demon… But the story is built around the Downworld. The Downworld has classes. At the top is the authority of the lot, Shadowhunters- half mundane and angel. They spend their time killing unruly demons and keeping other Downorlders in check. But they are such bigots and get caught up in themselves most the time. Then follows warlocks (human and demon blood), Fairies (demon and angel blood), werewolves(special human), and vampires (special human). This is all kept secret from mundanes (humans) by hiding and using glamours.
There are so many wonderful characters between the covers. Both heroic and evil, but all very well developed. I’d say I’m most like the delightful ginger, Henry Branwell. He’s most likely the most awkward of the bunch, tends to be quite the space case. He spends most his days in the Institutes basement trying to invent new doo-dads for the younger Shadowhunters to use while on duty. His wife, Charlotte, always shy away from each other because they both think that their love for each other is a one way street. Their parents had introduced each other and they still think that one was forced to marry the other; all a big misunderstanding.
I think that this would be considered ironic: the quirky Will finding out that demon pox exists. For years he joked about the existence of demon pox, a disease one gets when one acts ‘improper’ with a demon. One day they find out that their opponent, Benedict Lightwood, actually has the disease. Will sings and dances and tells all of them ‘I told you so!’.
WILLIAM HERONDALE-
Diary Entry: Before Confession
Today is the day I finally tell Tessa how I feel about her. I can only hope that she still feels the same way despite the horrible things I’ve spat at her on the roof that night… I wouldn’t blame her if she never forgave me. Yet now I see the world with a new light of hope and love. Five years wasted on thinking I was poison to those I loved, blown out of the water. I pledge to take care of Charlotte, Henry, Jem, even Church. Maybe I could even visit my family, you know after we figure out what Mortmain wants with then, and if they’re willing. But most of all now I can finally show my feelings for Tessa. My Tessa. Tessa. Tessa. Tessa. Isn’t it such a wonderful name? It was a wonderful scene to read. They then used it to blackmail Benedict into pulling the demand he put on court to search for Mortmain.
Diary Entry: Afterwards
Engaged-She’s engaged. All this time, these feelings, were for not. I-I asked if she loved him, truly loved him… When she said yes I felt like my heart had been savagely ripped from my chest… She would be happy. He would be happy. I on the other hand, I wont let this happen again. It hurts too much.
